Week 1 :]

  1. GENETIC ENGINEERING, RIGHT or WRONG?!

Hello! :D For the past few months, I've been currently interested in the subject of genetic engineering. The moment I studied it in Biology class, I found it fascinating. It amazed me on how an organism's genes can be directly manipulated and applied in ways that contribute to society. Industries such as agriculture and medicine have greatly benefitted from it.

My debate mainly concentrates on the question "IS GENETIC ENGINEERING MORALLY ACCEPTABLE?"

So far, I am confused on whether genetic engineering is a good thing or bad. I like how it helps many diabetics because insulin can be created through it. Also, I like how it can help people, but I am afraid that people will take advantage of it. For example, a person changing phenotype to the "popular" image. Everyone would end up looking exactly the same. There would be no individuality or uniqueness. We would live in a "perfect" society. Certain traits would no longer be special and lose its value because anyone would be able to have it if they wanted.

What do you think? Is it a good or bad idea to manipulate nature?

Debate
In my opinion, the debate was good.
-nice points
-interesting
Strongest: showing people horrors of war.
people should be aware of what's going on so they can be PREPARED for it!
-I think it makes civilians appreciate people going to war even more when they see what soldiers go through
-it helps people understand even if they find it scary
Weakest: people wouldn't understand if we showed them./ showing horrific photos of war is cruel
-how will people understand if we don't give them a chance?

WEEK 1 ACI Debate 3

Hello everyone, this is John Huang. So, today I would like to have a debate on PLAYSTATION 3 AND XBOX 360 because I personally love to play games and I have both of the consoles at home. For me, I prefer the playstation 3 because it has better graphics(blu-ray) than the xbox 360 do. Although the xbox has more games than the PS3 but the playstation has better quality games. For xbox, you will need to pay $60 for online each year but unlike the playstation 3, it has free online features so people could play online together for free and enjoy their time! Please give me your opinions on whether you would prefer the playstation or the xbox more! Thanks, and have a nice day!:)
2.) This debate is good. I think the strongest compelling arguments to me is that the media should show people the horrors of war so that the soldiers could see what they are facing for. The least compelling arguments to me is when they said they wouldn't be able to understand the full horrors of war..

week one :D i changed it yayyyy

This was an okay debate. I felt that they should of used stronger points and win the audience over(aka Chair). The side i liked best is the government side. They fully appreciated the fact that we people should all know the bad things in life and not all things are bad.

NOW FOR THE KOOL PART!!! OH YEA LEMONS!!!

MY favorite debate topic so far is the one with minors being adults...

its because like... WE DESERVE A CHANCE!!! people say youth is wasted on the young...ITS BECAUSE WE DON'T KNOW THE OUTSIDE WORLD!!! yea we can watch news, but we can't feel the heat of it.

examples: Johanna III Bernoulli, Norbert Wiener, and ALSO...TERANCE TAO!!! (started university at age NINE!!!)

well there is ALOT more but like i don't wanna type it. THEY WERE COLLEGE GRADS ATE LIKE AGE 15!!! its because they were allowed to explore the depths of education by learning other things from the REAL world. Not a microcosm of the world THE REAL ONE!!!

and if they're child labor, we kids can't say anything because we're not believed

and here are some pics

EVILL PEOPLE!!! SHEESH

awww she's so cute

well thats all the decent ones i could find...

i think i sorta drifted away...

OH WELL!!!

haha this is the end of my blog...

FOR NOW!!! MUHAHAHAHAA (~0~)

Week 1

1. The Pacific Trash Vortex is something that should be brought to our attention because it shows how much trash we humans dump in the oceans. Plastic debris from beaches and rives has accumulated in the Pacific Ocean and is now floating in a collection of trash, circulating with the wind patterns. This Plastic Vortex, is now estimated to be twice the size of Texas! Not many people think of this detrimental factor, and this is unfortunate because it is not only harmful to marine life, but also to us, when we eat fish and other seafood that has been poisoned by toxic chemicals released from plastic. I chose this topic because I think that it is important for us to understand how we, people, are harming our environment and the world we live in.

Heres a link that explains about the pacific trash vortex:

2. The debate was pretty good and each speaker gave good points and arguments overall. I thought that the government had a good argument of how people should know what is really happening during war, and that people should know how the setting is like, being prepared to go to war because they've already seen the horrors of it beforehand. I thought the weakest argument was on the opposition side when they said that people wouldn't understand what was shown to them, because, in a way, that implies that we aren't capable of it.

Week One

1. Debate: School Uniform

Is it more beneficial for a school to require their students to wear school uniform? This debate reveals the pros and cons of wearing uniforms to school. At first, the United States had few schools that required uniform; however, when schools discovered how uniform leads to more discipline and better educational results, more and more schools decided to change their policy. Personally, I dislike the thought of school uniform. When I think about uniform, I think of girls in plaid skirts and collared shirts. Disliking skirts, I was obviously against school uniform. This debate interested me because upon reading this, I became interested in each side of the argument, especially the for side.

2.This debate was interesting; overall, it was pretty good. One strong point was that people don't truly understand how bloody and violent it is in Iraq right now and there's a consequence that they don't know how long US should stay there or conduct our policies there. One good question brought up by the opposition side was, "What gives you the right to remove my family's ability to mourn my dead?" If you post the deaths of soldiers, it takes away from the grief and adds to anger.
"We can't send our troops if we are not willing to see what is truly going on." I don't think this is a strong point. He is assuming that we are not willing to see what is truly going on. There are other ways to deliver the message.

additional post :)

heyy I found a website that talked about the debate on the banning of plastic bags! It should be useful for the point/arg/evidence chart we have to do :) heres the link! http://debatewise.org/debates/1011-should-plastic-bags-be-banned

WEEK ONEE!!(:

My own topic(:?
i would make my topic :
We should stop and prevent WHALING.
most whales are endangered. i think that it is important to prevent people from whaling. japan is whaling and we should support the IWC (international whaling commision). i like this topic because whales are becoming extinct and people should care more about it.

yep,that's a whale & yep ,that's blood.

DEBATE:
[ those people have cool accents(:! ]
ANWAYS,i thought that the opening government were better than the other people because they were pretty organized. My favorite point is that if media shows the horrors of war, soldiers would be able to see what they are about to be headed for and that if the media shows the horrors of war, there will be less soldiers than before. My least favorite point is that people have the decision whether to show the horrors or wars or not.(:

Week 1 prompt.

Hey guys, my name is William. So far the topic I am most interested about for debating is WHICH BASKETBALL PLAYER IS BETTER, KOBE BRYANT OR LEBRON JAMES? I chose this because personally my favorite sport is basketball, and I am interested in hearing people's opinion about the two basketball stars.
2. I think the debate is ok, not the best I have seen. I felt the strongest argument in this debate is that the media have to show people the horrors of war. This will show people how cruel is war and be scared about it.I felt that the weakest argument is the one that said that showing pictures of the horrors of war is pure evil.

It's almost Week 2

Hi guys!

Just wanted to remind everyone that your posts are due tomorrow no later than 10pm. Also, you can begin doing research for the first debate on Friday. Here are the possible motions...
  • THW compel children to care for their parents
  • THW allow minors to apply to be recognised as adults before they reach they age of majority
  • THBT individuals who have undergone cosmetic surgery should be required to disclose it to anyone whom they want to have children with.
Good Luck!
Look forward to seeing you all Friday.

Week 1 :D

1. ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION, IS IT RIGHT OR WRONG?

Recently, when I was researching wildlife protection for an English assignment, I stumbled across a debate/article on animal experimentation. I was greatly interested because I'm an animal lover :) The debate concentrated on the question, "Is it morally acceptable to experiment on non-human animals to develop products and medicines that benefit human beings?" I have always been unable to answer this question because although I feel that it is wrong to perform possibly deadly experiments on animals just because they're not as "important" as humans, I can also see the benefits animal experimentation can have on human society. So I used this topic for this week's prompt because I hope that someone can provide an answer with good supporting reasons :)

2. I thought the debate was good :) the 2 sides responded well to each others' arguments. I thought the strongest argument was that the media should show the full horrors of war because it would give soldiers-to-be the real image instead of just military rumors. It would prepare them and let them know what they're going to face in war. I thought the least compelling argument was when the leader of opposition argued that although people would know the full horrors of war, they wouldn't be able to comprehend it. -__-
